Team Jardevall's sole trip east this season took them as far as Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for the Colorado Cog Rally. The rally is held in the Rocky Mountains, at about 7,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. Once again, regular co-driver Amity Trowbridge had a schedule conflict, so Janice Damitio was called in to fill the right seat.

The team started sixth on the road. Carl took it a little easy on the early stages, getting used to the differences in terrain and the route book. The early stage times dropped them to about 10th place at the first re-seed, but there were several stages where they ran as high as 6th fastest.

The end for the team came on Stage 7. "The Route Book said sweeping left, but it tightened more than expected," said Jardevall. "The entry was sweeping, but it tightened after the crest and there was no more road to use. We slid sideways, then the right rear wheel hit a pile of dirt and that kicked the back end of the car up so we were looking at the ground. The car bounced a couple of times, and ended up off the road with the nose pointing down on a pretty steep embankment."

"It was particularly disappointing as I was feeling very comfortable with the car," continued Jardevall. "I was taking advantage of the four-wheel-drive and felt that I had found the groove for the event. I believe that we had a good chance of being competitive with Laughlin O'Sullivan, who eventually finished in third place."

There was enough damage that the Team Jardevall Mitsubishi was unable to continue. However, Carl considered it fairly lucky as several rally cars were badly damaged or destroyed in spectacular rollover accidents. None of the occupants of those cars were injured other than a few bruises.

Carl is now looking to the 2006 rally season, though plans are not firm. Keep checking the Team Jardevall web site for latest information.

Double Victory at Washington Rallies: Dryad Quest and Shitepoke

Washington rallies are Carl Jardevall's playground. When the Team Jardevall entourage arrives at a rally, the other teams know their chances of winning are slim.

So it was with the Dryad Quest and Shitepoke rallies. Co-driver Amity Trowbridge was out of action for medical reasons, so Janice Damitio called the route book on Saturday's Dryad Quest. Dave Shrenk was the co-driver on Sunday's Shitepoke Rally.

Didn't matter. Jardevall dominated both events and came home with the First Place awards in each.

It was a hard fought weekend of rallying, but in the end it took a former World Rally Champion and a hard-charging newcomer to beat Team Jardevall to the finish at the 2005 running of the Oregon Trail Rally. While Carl Jardevall and co-driver Amity Trowbridge won the Open class in their seven-year-old Mitsubishi Evo, the overall victory went to 1984 World Rally Champion (and fellow Swede!) Stig Blomqvist in a David Sutton prepared 2003 Subaru WRX Sti, running in Group N. Travis Pastrana, AMA and X-Games Motocross champion, took his Vermont SportsCar prepared 2005 Subaru WRX STi to second place.

2004 SCCA ProRally champion Patrick Richard held second place for about half the rally, and was closing on Blomqvist, but a transmission failure left his Subaru WRX parked alongside the road. A flat tire slowed Team Jardevall on one stage, but Carl reported that he did not believe he could catch either of the remaining front runners. His independently run team fared quite well against the much newer, professionally prepped cars of Blomqvist and Pastrana. At the finish, Jardevall was over two minutes behind Blomqvist, but still three minutes ahead of fourth place finisher Matthew Iorio in an Open class Subaru.

New Name, New Look for 2005

1 April 2005

In Motion Rally Sport is now Team Jardevall! Though the team is using the same Mistsubishi Evo IV that they have run for the past several years, the car underwent considerable renovation during the off-season. In particular, rule changes under the sport's new sanctioning body, Rally America, required re-mapping of the engine management system. The car was also given a new paint job in yellow and blue, with the Mitsubishi Diamonds decorating the sides.

In an effort to slow the cars a bit and to provide closer competition, Rally America has specified a 34mm restrictor at the turbocharger on all Open Class cars. This means less power, and a challenge to optimize that power to the wheels. Team owner and driver Carl Jardevall called on a fellow native of Sweden for some assistance. Snorre Grunnan is the owner of San Rafael Mitsubishi, and the Team Jardevall Evo IV was treated to some time on the chassis dyno and the alignment rack at the San Rafael Mitsubishi Performance Shop. New engine mapping has brought the horsepower to 250hp at the wheels.

Carl reports that his driving style has had to change with the engine restrictions. The upshift points are different, with the window of shifting for peak torque now between 4500-5000 rpm. Carl says, "The car does not feel as powerful, but it does seem easier to drive."
