Double Victory in Oregon Club Rallies: Mt. Hood & Hood River
25 October 2004
Carl Jardevall and Amity Trowbridge once again dominated a pair of rallies in Oregon, the Mount Hood and Hood River events. The duo won Saturday's Mount Hood ClubRally by two minutes over the Hintz brothers, Dave and Rick, who were driving a Subaru. Jardevall captured wins on all but one stage in his Mitsubishi Evo IV, giving up the final of eight stages to Dave Hintz by only one second. Third place went to Gary Cavett and Erik Lyden in another Subaru, a mere two seconds behind Hintz.
The Hood River ClubRally was held on Sunday, with a total of seven stages, all of them won by the Evo IV of Jardevall and Trowbridge. Dave and Rick Hintz were again second, 1:30 in arrears. Gary Cavett and Erik Lyden finished third, 15 seconds behind the Hintz Subaru.
As at the Doo Wop rallies in the spring, the In Motion Rally Sport Mitsubishi ran flawlessly, requiring only minimal maintenance at service.

Oregon Trail: 2nd Overall, 1st in Open Class!!!
26 April 2004
The In Motion Rally Sport team of Carl Jardevall and Amity Trowbridge captured their best ever SCCA ProRally finish by taking second place overall at the Oregon Trail ProRally. They were the Open class winners as well. Jardevall and Trowbridge even led the event for awhile in their 1997 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV, but were overtaken late in the rally by the hard charging Patrick Richard in a Group N category Subaru, who eventually won. Richard's margin of victory over Jardevall was only 25 seconds after two days of rallying.
Richard, whose sister Nathalie co-drove for him, led after three short stages held at Portland International Raceway on Friday evening. Seamus Burke and Charles Bradley grabbed the early lead on Saturday in their more powerful 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8, but Jardevall set fastest times on stages 5 and 6, which elevated the Sideways Swede into the overall lead by two seconds over Burke.
"On Saturday there were a few cars ahead of us on the road" said Jardevall. "They swept the rocks away which gave us better traction. We were only a few seconds behind Burke, then he spun which cost about 20 seconds and we took over the lead after stage six. He was faster than we were on later stages, and by the end of the day we were 35 seconds behind him."
Richard, who was in third place going into the Sunday stages, came on strong with the new day, passing Jardevall for second place. Burke continued to hold the overall lead until a blown head gasket put his Mitsubishi out of commission after stage 13.
"We did not have a real good morning on Sunday," said Jardevall. "We were one of the first cars on the road so we were sweeping the (gravel) marbles off the surface and not getting as much traction. And I kept hearing noises in the car which I thought might be serious, so I was not pushing at 100 percent. As it turns out, the car ran just fine. All the crew had to do was check it over at each service and change tires."
Jardevall will not be competing at the Rim of the World ProRally, but Trowbridge will be co-driving for Bill Malik in a Volvo 240.
Jardevall dominates Doo Wops, wins all stages!
Sets new record on Brooklyn Tavern Stage
8 March 2004
"They were in a class by themselves!" That's what the competition had to say about Carl Jardevall and Amity Trowbridge at the 2004 running of the Doo Wop ClubRallys. Jardevall clearly dominated the field in his 1997 Mitsubishi Evo IV, winning every stage.
"It was an easy weekend for me," reported Jardevall after the pair of rallies. "All I had to do was start the car and drive it. Everything worked like it should. The service crew didn't really have to do anything but check the car over. I don't think we even had to add any oil!"
The overall margin on Doo Wop I was just over two minutes. Jardevall's time for the five stages totalled 34:51, while the next closest competitors were Dave and Rick Hintz in a recently acquired Subaru WRX at 36:53. Gary Cavett and Erik Lyden were third, another five seconds behind in a 1995 Subaru.
Jardevall's time of 6:33 on the famous Brooklyn Tavern stage shattered the old record of 6:42 set by Paul Choiniere in one of the factory-backed Hyundai Tiburons in 1998. Jardevall's previous personal best came in 2002 in the same Mitsubishi Evo IV that he ran in 2004. The Sideways Swede also holds the Brooklyn Tavern record for the fastest stage time in a 2WD car - 6:49 - set in the Nordic Motors Volvo in 2001. The seven-mile stage, considered by many to be the best rally stage in the United States, is a former railroad grade between Oakville and Brooklyn, Washington.
"Word of our time on the Brooklyn Tavern stage had been radioed to the crews in service," said Jardevall. "When we arrived at service after running the stage, they all applauded as we pulled into our parking spot. That was pretty exciting."
Jardevall continued his winning ways on Sunday's Doo Wop II, taking first place by over two minutes ahead of Paul Eklund and Jeff Price in a 2002 Subaru WRX. Jardevall's five stage total was 45:51, while Eklund came in at 48:17. Dave and Rick Hintz were third in their Subaru, with a time of 48:31.
Look for the Nordic Motors in Motion Mitsubishi to make its next appearance at the oregon Trail ProRally in late April.
